Over Memorial Day weekend, the family headed to San Jose and attended "FanimeCon", an annual convention of fans of cosplaying, video games, animation, etc. On Saturday, Felicia and I dressed up as Mario and Princess Peach from Mario Tennis. Jason and Amara dressed up as opposing scouts from Team Fortress 2 (TF2). On Sunday, we all dressed up as characters from the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario, Princess Peach, Toad and Toadette.

For Amara's 10th Birthday, she chose an Olympics-themed birthday party with various sporting events and party games. The party began with guests entering the "Olympic Village" and decorating their water bottles with markers and stickers.

The first events were Synchronized Ping Pong (like "Simon Says") and Basketball-bomb (like "Hot Potato"). That was followed by a Parade of Nations Quiz where the teams tried to match pictures of flags to their respective countries.

The rotating events included Candy Matching (like "Memory"), Javelin Throwing and Sailboat Racing. After each guest had a chance to compete in each event, we had the Gold Medal Piñata ceremony.

Back inside, as we were grilling hamburgers, we kept the kids busy with our version of Scattergories followed by several rounds of Olympic Events Bingo. Finally, Felicia brought out the homemade Gymnastics cake, with a fondant-wrapped cookie dough mat.Blainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06379274325110866036noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19824914.post-86312342456122671352013-01-26T13:03:00.000-08:002013-01-26T13:49:01.416-08:00Amara's visit to Mission San Juan BautistaIt is that time of year when the 4th graders study the California missions and create a Mission Project of one of the 21 missions.

Amara chose Mission San Juan Bautista since it was within driving distance for a visit and because she wanted to create a video of our visit to Mission San Juan Bautista.

Interesting facts about the Mission:

Largest of the 21 California Missions.

Its church is the largest in the mission chain and is the only with a main aisle and two naves.

Was used as the setting for Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Vertigo" starring Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak.

This is now our 14th year of dressing in costumes together. Our theme this year was "The Four Seasons" with Amara dressed as "Spring" (a butterfly), Jason dressed as "Summer" (a surfer), Felicia dressed as "Autumn" (a tree) and Blaine dressed as "Winter" (a snowman).

As always, all our costumers are completely homemade. Felicia sewed Amara's black shirt and leggings. Blaine constructed the butterfly wings using wire which Felicia covered in fabric. Notice how there are actually fore and hind wings (top and bottom). We then decorated the front and back with fabric and paint, constructed a harness from a deconstructed backpack and attached the wings. The wings were attached so that they could actually pivot back and forth like real wings.

Jason's shirt was sewn by Felicia using a shark-pattern fabric and matching fish buttons. Blaine constructed the surfboard using a foam core surrounded by cardboard, and added a tail fin to the bottom. The board was primed, then spray-painted yellow and finally the shades of blue and black were added. After all that dried, a final layer of urethane was applied to give it a nice glossy sheen.

Felicia sewed her vintage dress with a yoke and large scooping sleeves which were lined with a satin fabric. The dress was then decorated with strands of fall leaves. Felicia also constructed a headpiece with several additional leaves to complete the look.

Blaine's snowman costume started as embroidery hoops which were linked by curved wire. Additional wires were added to complete the shape. On top of that, he added felt around any wire ends and added two layers of batting with hot glue. Felicia sewed a couple of cylinders made out of fleece fabric with drawstrings on top and bottom. These were cinched up to cover each of the snowballs. The final details were a set of 3 large black buttons, a nose out of orange posterboard, a hat with added ribbon and winter berries and finally mittens and a scarf sewn by Felicia.

We won several individual prizes and as well as a prize for our group theme. Apart from that, it was just a lot of fun parading around and seeing people react. It was always fun when people finally put the puzzle together and figured out our theme.

Blainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06379274325110866036noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19824914.post-22179002617880932082012-06-05T23:11:00.000-07:002012-06-06T08:44:15.169-07:00Photos of the Transit of Venus, extremely rare event! To safely view the Transit of Venus, we set up a pair of binoculars and projected the image of the sun onto a flat surface. It was really exciting to see the image of the sun with a tiny black dot which was the planet Venus.

A transit of Venus across the Sun takes place when the planet Venus passes directly between the Sun and Earth, becoming visible against (and hence obscuring a small portion of) the solar disk. The event is visible for several hours.

Transits of Venus are among the rarest of predictable astronomical phenomena. They occur in a pattern that repeats every 243 years, with pairs of transits eight years apart separated by long gaps of 121.5 years and 105.5 years.

This transit of Venus occurred on June 5 in our location and is the last Venus transit of the 21st century. The prior transit took place on June 8, 2004. The previous pair of transits were in December 1874 and December 1882. The next transits of Venus will be in December 2117 and December 2125.

Venus transits are historically of great scientific importance as they were used to gain the first realistic estimates of the size of the Solar System. In particular, observations of the 1639 transit, combined with the principle of parallax, provided an estimate of the distance between the Sun and the Earth that was more accurate than any other up to that time.
First came the stockings which were overflowing with gifts from "Santa." Then we had a breakfast of homemade banana chocolate chip muffins, omelets, waffles, sausage and scrambled eggs.

Next we got the turducken ready for roasting. For anyone that hasn't heard of a turducken it is a deboned turkey, stuffed with a duck and finally a chicken. In between each bird there's a layer of stuffing. This was the first time we ever tried a turducken and it was a fun culinary experience.

After that we opened gifts, played some games and relaxed until dinner time. For dinner we had turducken, haricot vert, peas, mashed potatoes with homemade gravy and cranberry sauce. For dessert we had a pudding and berry pie topped with homemade candy cane vanilla ice cream. (The ice cream maker was a Christmas gift from the cats.)

Jason was the inspiration for this year's theme. He wanted to be a Viking, so we quickly thought of Early Explorers of the New World. We have Amara as a Native American, Jason as Leif Ericson, Blaine as Christopher Columbus and Felicia as an English colonist.

All told, it took Felicia about 3 weeks of constant sewing to finish up all our costumes. Columbus' outfit alone had four major parts with the white undershirt, the brocade doublet, the knee-length pants and the outer coat. Felicia's dress required lots of gathering, especially for the drapes. She made her bonnet and learned about millinery wire, iron-on webbed interfacing, more gathering, etc. For Jason's costume, I painted and detailed his helmet and created a viking shield while Felicia sewed the armor, shirt and pants and the bracing for his arms and legs. Finally on Amara's costume, I did the beading on her headband, Felicia sewed and detailed the costume and we both sewed on beads on to the fringe on the sleeves and the bottom of the dress.

We entered two local Halloween costume contests and we won first place and second place respectively in the groups and family categories.

Michael and Rosemary opted to "do their own thing" this year, so Michael dressed as "The Creep" from the Lonely Island music video, while Rosemary dressed as Princess Zelda from the Ocarina of Time.Blainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06379274325110866036noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19824914.post-61394607818045040342011-08-21T23:37:00.001-07:002023-01-06T23:13:01.604-08:00Camping, Hiking, Tubing at Zion National Park

The tubing course consists of two steep, long lanes, each with a couple humps and a big half-pipe at the end. There's a moving "magic carpet" escalator to get you to the top of the hill and then a quick, fast ride down to the bottom.
We had fun racing each other, spinning, performing running starts, riding backwards, etc. And when you got up some good speed, you might find yourself getting some air at the bottom of the run then doing a 180°.
